It’s been a hot minute since I’ve had a book come out and this is a) the first book I’ve had coming out since I became a mom and b) the first book I’ve had come out from a publisher that is standalone. I think I forgot how much work book launches are? Not that the book is successfully launched currently, but there’s a lot of soft lead-in on the actual launch day (September 7th for those following along at home) that is basically content generation in the unfeeling void of the 2020’s internet.
There are social media posts to design and newsletter emails to send out. There are tons of coordination emails; with the publisher, with other authors who have things coming out around the same time, with podcasts and bookstores. A lot of it is fun! But for me, this kind of work is done in the fifteen minutes before bed at the end of a very long day, or in a few spare minutes before work, or, more recently (and a huge relief) during my lunch break. The reasons for this boil down to: I want to be present in my toddler’s life and also he still doesn’t reliably sleep through the night (last night, for example, we woke up at 2, 4, and 6 am before I gave up and dragged myself out of bed at 7 am). I had some pretty fun health stuff due to sleep deprivation early on in his life so I try very hard to protect my sleep time, which in this case means being in my own bed unconscious by 11 pm (after getting chores done, getting him to sleep, and doing all the things I need to do to be back up in the morning and quasi-functional and guzzling caffeine).
So yeah, that doesn’t leave a lot of room for book promo!
Nonetheless, I have persevered. And probably caused exasperation to many of you mortals that are helping me along the way – sorry! Emails are hard!
The book is officially featured on the publisher’s website today, and I am so glad we’ve made it to this point. I’m thankful to my publisher for working with me, and to all of you who continue to help me figure out how to scream about the book into the void! And I cannot wait until September 7th gets here.
