Required resting

“Rest, or I’ll do it for you.” – my body, probably.

It is July and I have a summer cold. I worked entirely through the first day, did half days the second two days, and today I have given up. I am currently drinking matcha on the porch. The heat has broken. It feels like fall, and I wonder at the girl who loved summer and where she has gone. Fall is a relief.

A writing friend and I recently discussed all our unfinished projects. I’ve been lamenting my inability to get one thing over the finish line for a while now. This is hardly fair to myself – obviously I have a novella coming out in September – but it’s also a true feeling, the constant moving of the bar, the constant need to be doing more. For me 2026 has felt like a somewhat fallow year, despite the promo and the publicity and the very real progress on WIP revisions.

This goes to show that brains are silly. Maybe silliest when trying to move the needle on projects while fogged with a virus.

Anyway, though I can’t love being sick, I am grateful for the chance to sit on my porch and reflect on this fine morning in July. Life happens at its own pace. Today, life includes lots of herbal teas, anime, porch time, and rest – a luxury I have not had for two years. So I’ll take it.

“Nature does not hurry, and yet all is accomplished.” – Lao Tzu, definitely. Good advice for a slow day.

  1. I hope, as the child grows, you get more and more moments (and longer ones) of rest. May you have personal autumns at least once a week! But sans colds.
