I’ve been to several in-person, mask-free events recently. I didn’t intend for them to be mask-free, but upon arrival found that I was the only person masked. I probably could have doubled down and made a statement — did for the first one. But several of these were work events and the politics get….a little iffy for a lot of reasons. In my neck of the woods, we’re pretty purple usually. Mauve even. Masking can get a little weird in certain spaces. I’ve had Covid and I’m vaccinated. I have to choose which fights I’m going to fight.
I, like many others, think this is all moving a bit too fast. But it’s also been a very long year-and-change, so I want to look forward to things. One of the things I’m looking forward to is movies. I want to see a movie in theaters. I want this with a soul-deep longing. I don’t want an old movie. I want a new movie, something that’s going to absolutely knock my socks off. With all the sudden unmasking happening, I’m also very uncomfortable with going to a movie theater. But I’m trying to focus on the positives in this transition, for now. So here are the movies I heartily hope I get to see in theaters, maybe, if the numbers stay down and things go well.
The Green Knight
Every single trailer I’ve seen for this movie absolutely twists my heart. The Green Knight is a complex legend and the colors and atmosphere of the clips I’ve seen so far are astounding. I absolutely cannot wait for this film, which is expected on July 30th. I’m not sure how I will get to watch this one, but I’m watching it somewhere as soon as I can get my hands on it.
Some early reviews say this movie ends “abruptly” to which I say, “duh.” But if there’s one movie that I go see in theaters this year, it will be Dune. It’s part one of two, and I have high hopes for this adaptation. The book is, obviously, a classic, and Villanueva did an amazing job with Arrival and Bladerunner 2049, both of which I’ve written about on the blog. I only hope we don’t have to wait too long for part two.
Thor: Love & Thunder
This comes out in April of 2022 but I’ve got it on this list because I want it in my brainpan badly. I love everything Taika Waititi does. His mix of humor and pathos in Hunt for the Wilderpeople and JoJo Rabbit make them two of my favorite movies. I’m ready to see what’s in store for Thor.
