Reading Round-up: March/April 2026

Y’all, I have been reading so much.

This is probably a variety of things. I’ve had a lot going on at the dayjob and my ability to create new fictional words has suffered, plus it’s been pretty gloomy the past couple of months with wild temperature swings, plus my kid has decided with the time change that he goes to sleep at 10 pm now…anyway, it’s another season of my schedule being in flux and not a lot of time to myself, so I end up reading in the stolen moments to maintain my sanity. So without further ado, all the things I have read in March and April.

The Incandescent by Emily Tesh

What a fabulously wonderful take on dark academia, and also wow did this book do some fun things with structure. I do so enjoy Tesh. She is rapidly becoming one of my must-read authors. This book seemed to have wrapped up the whole thing about 30% of the way in, which is when I knew we were in trouble. Wonderful time, I loved every second of it. (Urban Fantasy, Dark Academia, LGBTQ+)

The Tomb of Dragons by Katherine Addison

I really enjoyed this book, though it took me a while to get back into it. Something about the narrative element of feeling called to do things you don’t per se enjoy really spoke to me at that time in my life. I feel like I could write a whole essay on being called to do things that I am very competent at and are highly necessary for the world to go on. Instead, I read this lovely book, which was far more enjoyable. (Fantasy, LGBTQ+)

The Witch Roads Duology by Kate Elliott

The first book in this duology was absolutely surprising and wonderful and I loved it without reservation. I will say that the second installment didn’t quite take me where I wanted to go – I think I was left wanting to know too much! There is a whole other story in here for sure, and I need to know how it goes from there. Overall, though, definitely recommend, would 100% say this is moving the genre forward. (Fantasy, LGBTQ+)

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews

I read the preview for this and then lost my mind waiting for the actual release. At last, at the end of March, it had come! Reader, I have read it twice. It was so good. I am so ready for book 2. (Fantasy, Isekai, Romance)

Beast Business by Ilona Andrews

This was a fun read, though not quite my favorite – I think I somehow convinced myself it took place after the main Hidden Legacy series, and so I disappointed myself. The Arabella novella was well worth the price of entry on its lonesome, however, and I do someday dream that they actually write her books. (Urban Fantasy, Romance)

Snake-Eater by T. Kingfisher

There’s a meme going around right now, something something “if they write it I will read it” and unfortunately for you all this month’s list is a who’s who of that. Snake-Eater was also a bit nostalgic for me, reminding me of the desert of my distant childhood. I really enjoyed it. (Horror)

Tune in next time for maybe something a little different! Who knows! I might even read some science fiction!
